Wine and Other Alcoholic Beverages
Cyprus is famous for its distinguishing wines and wine-based beverages. Wine production is a tradition which derives from the ancient times. It is believed that Cyprus was one of the first countries to cultivate the vine and lay out vineyards. One of the best known and oldest wines is "Commandaria", a sweet dessert port-like wine made from the special varieties of red grapes. One of the legends says that Richard the Lion Heart conquered the island especially for "Commandaria" and proclaimed it "the wine of kings and the king of wines." Other popular wines of Cyprus are "Palomino", "St. Panteleimon", and "Othello".
Brandy Sour is another famous drink in Cyprus, mixed from local brandy, fresh lemon juice, angostura, soda and ice. Besides, pay attention to the orange-based liquor "Filfar" and brandy "Five Kings".
In the north you may find several strong traditional drinks such as "raki" ("uzo"), and "zivania", grape vodka.
